Ethnic cleansing and Catalan nationalism

Josep Sort is a professor of politics at Barcelona University. He is a candidate for Puigdemont’s party JuntsxCat in this spring’s Catalan parliamentary election. He proposes a policy of ethnic cleansing.
“We will cleanse the Spaniards from Catalonia, promise.”

He has form. He has called for the immigration holding centre to be used for the internment of Spaniards.

Catalan nationalists laugh at death – when a Spaniard dies

Joan Marc Jesús is a Catalan nationalist, a leading member of the secessionist ANC (Catalan National Assembly) and of the ERC party (Catalan Republican Left, the one that has its origins in 1930s fascism).
The other day a Spanish air force plane crashed in the sea, killing the pilot. This charming specimen of the Catalan nation thought that it would be funny to tweet that the air force was “throwing rubbish into the sea” and “They are polluting the ecosystem. I hope that no marine species has suffered.”

And while we are on the subject of disgusting Catalans, let us return to Xavi Boada Vila, whom we have met before (here).
“In an independent Catalonia the first language will be Catalan. The second, fairly widely spoken will be French with English third. Spanish will be residual for immigrants and workers who don’t want to get on in life.”

An old-school Catalan racist

La Vanguardia, 27-02-01
Barrera says that the inflow of immigrants is endangering the survival of Catalonia.
  • In America the Negros have a lower IQ than whites.
  • People with genetic mental deficiencies should be sterilised.
  • It’s more important to save Catalonia than democracy.
  • Immigration is the main threat to Catalonia, we have managed to overcome the wave of Andalusians but now the Catalan language is in danger. I’d like a Catalonia like with the Republic: without immigrants.
  • No-one will convince me that a Rambla is better with mixed-race people than one with only white people walking on it.
  • When Haider [the Austrian far-right leader] says there are too many immigrants, he’s not being racist, he’s telling the truth.
  • I’m not against the death penalty, this debate should be opened.
  • I have more respect for an ETA murderer than for a common criminal because the etarra kills for noble convictions, not for money.
  • The waves of immigration are a plan to decatalanise Catalonia.
  • The solution for unemployment is to expel the immigrants who are stealing our work.
  • There is a genetic distribution in the Catalan population that is statistically different from the sub-Saharan.
  • What substantially complicates things is that it is more difficult to integrate a Latin American than an Andalusian.
  • I do not claim that a country should have a pure race but there is a genetic distribution in the Catalan population that is statistically different from that of the sub-Saharan population for example.
  • I am not a racist or a xenophobe.
JEREC, the youth movement of ERC
The quotations above are from a man called Heribert Barrera. He was no minor player. On the contrary, he was a leading figure in Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, the Catalan Republican Left. And if ever a party was wildly misnamed, this is it. It springs originally from the Catalan fascist movement Estat Català that flourished in the 1930s after asking Mussolini for advice on how to be good fascists.

"Escamots" in Barcelona. The shorts were green.

Barrera was the first President of the Catalan Parliament from 1980 until 1984 after the restitution of democracy, and was President of ERC from 1991 to 1995. When he died in 2011, the Catalan political class gave him the nearest thing to a state funeral that could be arranged, with symbols of official mourning in the Parliament. The then Catalan premier Artur Mass described him as a “master of patriots” and presented him as an example for young Catalans to follow.

A ceremony in the Catalan Parliament was led by its then President Núria de Gispert, who said, “The mark that he made was very, very deep, much deeper than would ever have been imagined.” She described him as “a politician of capital importance coming from service to the people and a tireless man in the fight for liberty.”

Jordi Pujol, another former Catalan premier and self-confessed mega-scale tax fraudster, described Barrera as “a gentleman who was sometimes hard, but was a respectful politician.” He continued his eulogy, “As a young man you chose a commitment that you have maintained for 75 years because you are a man of sound, consistent values, and you have been an example … at such a difficult time, subjected to economic, social and demographic pressure that could affect cohesion, memory of e Barrera and his warnings cane serve us to face the future.” This last comment is a clear reference to Barrera’s views on people from elsewhere moving into Catalonia.

Catalan nationalism has a nasty racist streak, as does any kind of nationalism. I have already mentioned examples of it: A posh Catalan racist, Catalan language and racism, Beyond the smoke and mirrors. I will return to the matter again.

A posh Catalan racist

Xavi Boada Vila is a racist.
That is the conclusion to be drawn from his tweets.

Hitler killed Jews, all Spain has to do now is kill the Catalans because everything that Hitler did with the Jews Spain has already done to the Catalans.
Most of you who insult me don’t have 1% of my followers, you mean I’m stupid and you are VERY INTELLIGENT. Then why don’t you have so many thousands of followers? Can it be because you only know how to insult people? Or because you’re really dumb?

In Catalonia we don’t need more Andalusians, stay at home and work at what you know about, waiting for your dole money that the Catalans pay, if we need proper labour the Latinos and Moroccans can run rings round you.

The crude language and ideas, and the unorthodox punctuation, reflect the quality of the Catalan original. The man is a writer with three novels to his name, though they have fared dreadfully on Amazon. But that doesn’t matter. He is a rich kid. He lives in Matadepera near Barcelona, a small town of 8,841 inhabitants that is the second richest municipality in Spain. Its inhabitants declare an average gross income of €54,113 per year. This is neither surprising nor coincidental. Catalan independence has always drawn its support from the wealthy Catalan bourgeoisie who run Catalonia (as we have seen) for themselves and despise those whom they regard as the racially inferior types from the south.

This sort of thing is nothing new in the world. We have seen the same crudeness in the UK. Boada may be posh socially, but morally he is on the same level as this.

Catalan language and racism

Language and nationalism often go hand-in-hand. Catalonia is no exception. On the contrary, it has the language obsession in a particularly virulent form. It is a phenomenon that I will deal with fully some other time, but this tweet gives a flavour of what we have. Josep María Virgili i Ortiga is a retired Head of Catalan Language at a secondary school.
Yes, in Catalonia there are two languages; Catalan and Gascon Occitan, in the Val d’Aran. All the other languages (Spanish, Arabic, French, Urdu) are languages of people who have come from outside.
In basic linguistic terms, the first sentence is unremarkable. Catalan and Aranese are indeed different, though both are forms of Occitan (Languedoc). The Val d’Aran is an unusual place; in the north-west corner of Catalonia, it is one of only two small parts of Spain that are north of the Pyrenean watershed and its local language is indeed a form of Gascon.
However, nationalist politics always raises its ugly head in Catalonia. Aranese is recognised as an official language in Catalonia, being distinct in origin from Catalan. The writer names four other languages: Arabic and Urdu are the languages spoken by recent immigrants from Morocco and Pakistan (Barcelona has a considerable Pakistani community, the largest in Europe outside the UK it is said). Spanish and French are the languages of the countries with regions called Catalonia. The racist implication is evident: French and Spanish speakers, respectively north and south of the Pyrenees, are immigrants equally with Moroccans and Pakistanis. And there is no prize for guessing what this Catalan nationalist is implying about those last two groups.
This is nonsense on stilts. Spanish has always been spoken in Catalonia since the language developed its own identity in the Middle Ages. Don Quixote rode to Barcelona in 1616 and rather liked the city, though he had problems with brigands as he passed through the rural areas of Catalonia. There is no suggestion that he was made unwelcome as a Spanish invader or that he had trouble speaking his own language with the local population.
There is more. The Val d’Aran is one of the areas where independence is not favoured. In the event of independence it might well consider remaining in Spain as part of the Aragonese community. This would put the Aranese in a difficult position because – the proposed constitution of an independent Catalan Republic seceded from Spain makes no provision for secession from its own territory!

Carrion-eaters, vipers, hyenas and beasts in human shape

This is a translation of an article written in 2008 by Quim Torra, who is now the Premier of Catalonia. The racism and hatred of everything Spanish is now the guiding thread of his government.

* * * * *
At home there was an old copy of a book that all my brothers and sisters had read When the beasts could talk by Manuel Folch i Torres. Father was unbending and, like The Rose and the Ring by Thackeray and Bolavà by Josep Maria Folch, he felt that nobody could grow up without reading them. It was a delightful book in which lettuces, bears, elephants, deer and bumblebees could talk, a collection of fables intended for the education of children.

Now look at your country and the beasts are talking again. But they’re of a different type. Carrion-eaters, vipers, hyenas. Beasts in human shape but who savour hate. A disturbed, nauseating hate, like mouldy false teeth, against everything that the Catalan language represents.

They are here, among us. They find any expression of Catalan-ness repugnant. It is a sick phobia. There is something Freudian in these beasts. Or a small blip in their DNA chain. Poor individuals! They live in a country of which they know nothing: its culture, its traditions, its history. They move around impermeable to any event that represents Catalan reality. It brings them out in a rash. They are repelled by anything that is not Spanish and written in the Spanish language.

The beasts are well known. We all know one of them. There are lots of them, the beasts. They live, die and multiply. The other day one of them caused an incident that hasn’t got to Catalonia and is worth explaining as an extraordinary example of the beastliness of these beings. Poor beasts, they can’t help it.

One of the few airlines that accept the Catalan language as normal is Swiss. If you have taken any of their flights to the old Confederation, you will have noticed that they use our language on take-off and landing. An exception since unfortunately, with the other companies, we are treated exactly as what we are, the last colony in Europe.

Well, a couple of weeks ago one of these beasts was travelling on a Swiss flight. On arrival, there was the typical announcement in Catalan prior to landing. The beast, automatically, foamed rabidly at the mouth. A stench like a sewer came from her seat. She stirred restlessly, desperately, horrified at hearing four words in Catalan. She had no way out. A mucous sweat, as of a flu-ridden toad, poured from her armpits. Just imagine her, the beast, after so much time (!), those however, can live in their Spanish world with no problems, hearing four words in a language that she hates. Indignant, she decided to write a letter to a German newspaper in Zurich, complaining about how she had been treated as "her rights had been violated", Spanish being the "first official language of Spain ", and the beast’s complaint was published on a full page.

Thank God, the good friends of the Catalan Centre in Zurich replied putting the matter straight, just a small centre acting thanks to the decency and dignity of its members.

But why should it be necessary to take action every time? When will the beasts stop attacking? In 2008 how can we put up with so much strife, so much humiliation and so much disdain?
